Istanbul is gigantic. Crossing from one continent to another can take 4 minutes with the Marmaray or 2 hours if you try the bridge during rush hour. Move smartly, avoid wasting your time and money.

Here is the complete user guide to navigate like an authentic Istanbulite. From the underwater metro to traditional ferries, via cable cars and Taxi or Scooter apps, move around with complete peace of mind.

⚡️ The Essentials in 30 seconds

  • The Key: The Istanbulkart is absolutely essential. This rechargeable card costs 165 TL (£2.90) and the standard fare is 35 TL (£0.60) per trip in 2026.
  • Navigation: Download the application Otobüsüm Nerede (real-time data for Istanbul public transport) or use Google Maps.
  • Common Sense: In the old district of Sultanahmet, walk! The T1 tram is often crowded and distances between sites are short.
  • The Critical Hour: Avoid any road vehicle (bus/taxi) absolutely between 8am-10am and 5pm-7pm, traffic jams are legendary.

💳 How to pay for your transport?

The Istanbulkart is a rechargeable card that you buy for 165 TL (£2.90) (without balance) in the yellow machines present in all stations. The fare per trip is 35 TL, i.e., £0.60. For a 3 to 5 day trip, load about 400 to 500 TRY (£7-£9).

Contactless Bank Card

You can pay directly at the gates with your contactless Visa or Mastercard. Warning: the fare is higher than with the Istanbulkart. This option is convenient for an occasional trip, but not cost-effective over several days.

⚠️ Important Note: No cash payment is accepted on board buses, metros, or trams. Get your Istanbulkart as soon as you arrive.

🚇 The 4 Transport Lines

T1 – The Tram

This line connects all iconic sites: Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque), Eminönü (Egyptian Bazaar), and continues to Kabataş. Warning: it is the most crowded line in Istanbul, especially between 9am and 5pm. Prefer walking for short distances in the historic center.

Marmaray (Underwater Train)

This train crosses the Bosphorus in an underwater tunnel and connects Europe to Asia in just 4 minutes. Special Fare: for non-personalized cards (tourists), the Marmaray costs 60 TL (£1.05) regardless of the journey, compared to 27-60 TL for residents.

M2 – The Metro

The main axis of the modern city, crossing Taksim, shopping districts (Şişli, Levent) and continuing north. It is the fastest and air-conditioned metro, ideal for escaping summer heat or tourist crowds.

The Ferry (Vapur)

Traditional ferries between Eminönü and Kadıköy (Asian side) are an institution. For 35 TL (£0.60) with the Istanbulkart, you enjoy a 20-minute mini-cruise on the Bosphorus with views of both shores.

⭐ The “Pleasure & History” Lines

Don’t take these transports to go fast, but for the beauty of the journey and the authenticity of the experience.

Pierre Loti Cable Car (TF2)

This cable car transports you from Eyüp Sultan to the top of Pierre Loti hill. In a few minutes of ascent, you reach the famous Pierre Loti café with its panoramic view of the Golden Horn and the hills of Istanbul.

Practical Tip: Come early in the morning (before 10am) or late afternoon. The queue is often very long between 11am and 4pm, especially on weekends.

Nostalgic Tram (T2)

The iconic little red tram that has run along İstiklal Avenue since 1914. Suspended in 1961, it was put back into service to preserve Beyoğlu’s heritage. This historic tram connects Taksim to Tünel over 1.6 km.

Instagram Tip: Take it for the souvenir photo or to rest your legs after shopping, but on foot you will often go faster! İstiklal Avenue is pedestrian and the tram stops frequently.

Tünel (F2) – The Dean of Metros

Inaugurated in 1875, Tünel is the second oldest underground metro in the world. This historic funicular connects Karaköy to the Beyoğlu district in just 90 seconds. The 573 meters of tunnel constitute a unique experience.

🚕 Yellow Taxis & Sea Taxis

⚠️ Yellow Taxis (WARNING)

The 2 scams to know absolutely:

  1. The Magic Bill: You give 200 TL, the driver discreetly swaps it for 20 TL and claims the rest. Countermove: Announce the amount out loud (“Two hundred liras”) before letting go of the bill.
  2. The meter off or “fixed price”: The driver refuses to turn on the taksimetre (meter) and announces an exorbitant price. Countermove: Demand the meter or get out of the taxi to order another one via an app.
Taxi Istanbul

Golden Rule: NEVER hail a taxi on the street.
Use exclusively the apps BiTaksi or Uber.

🚤 Sea Taxi (İBB Deniz Taksi)

Want to avoid traffic jams with class and speed? The Istanbul municipality launched in 2021 a system of modern blue water taxis that crisscross the Bosphorus.

How it works: Booking via the mobile app İBB Deniz Taksi available on iOS and Android. The service operates 24/7. Each boat can transport up to 10 people.

2026 Fare: 420 TL per trip (about £7.35) regardless of the number of passengers. Ideal for groups or for a VIP experience on the water. You split the cost between 6 to 10 people and the trip becomes very cost-effective.

✈️ Arrival and Departure (Airports)

Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport (IST) – European Side

  • Havaist Bus: Economical solution, several lines to Taksim, Sultanahmet, etc. Allow 1h30 to 2h depending on traffic.
  • Metro M11: The line is off-center and requires connections. Not ideal for a first visit with luggage.
  • Private Transfer: Recommended option to avoid stress: Book here.

Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) – Asian Side

  • Metro M4: Direct connection to Kadıköy (Asian center).
  • Havabus Bus: Links to Taksim via the bridge (count 1h30-2h depending on traffic).
  • Private Transfer: Recommended option to avoid stress: Book here.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there Uber in Istanbul?

Yes, but Uber does not have its own fleet. The app orders official yellow taxis. Some drivers try to renegotiate the price after accepting the ride. Prefer BiTaksi, the more reliable local app used by Istanbulites.
