🧭 Why visit the Kadıköy district?

Why does everyone talk about Kadıköy? Simply because it is the soul of Istanbul today. It is here that you feel the pulse of modern Istanbul life: young, creative, gourmet, and fiercely attached to its laid-back atmosphere. Forget the crowds of tourists, here you mingle with the locals.

I am facing an aerial view of Kadıköy, showing the coast, buildings, and the Çamlıca TV tower, 369 meters high.
Kağıthane illustrates Istanbul’s urban regeneration between river and animated skyline. Parks, pools, and modern buildings testify to its rapid transformation.

Concretely, Kadıköy is a labyrinth of happiness. You will find one of the city’s most renowned markets, the famous Bahariye Street (the local “Champs-Élysées”), the bohemian Moda district with its cafes and designer boutiques, and a seaside promenade offering a spectacular view. It is the “instagrammable” district par excellence!

🚇 How to get to Kadıköy?

Reaching the Asian side may seem intimidating, but it is actually child’s play and an integral part of the experience! Here are the best options.

Ferry and Metro

The most iconic and, honestly, the most magical way is to take the ferry (vapur). From Eminönü (near the Galata Bridge) or Karaköy, the journey takes about 20 minutes and offers you a breathtaking panoramic view. The cost is negligible with the Istanbulkart. Otherwise, the metro line M4 drops you directly in the heart of Kadıköy, a very fast option if you are coming from the Asian side.

Nostalgic Tram kadikoy old historic train istanbul
I hop on the nostalgic Kadıköy tram to rediscover the very special retro atmosphere of the district. At every turn, I rediscover Istanbul’s Asian side in a timeless bubble.

Bus, Marmaray, and Taxi

Many bus lines serve Kadıköy, but the ferry remains simpler and more pleasant. The Marmaray (train under the Bosphorus) is also an excellent fast option from Sirkeci (European side).

For a taxi, a ride from Taksim will cost around 400-500 TL (depending on traffic). If you are new to Uber, you can take advantage of a discount on your first rides via my referral link: get a £30.50 discount.

Pedestrian street in Moda lined with shops, cafes, and trees, decorated with colorful balls. Tram tracks and passers-by under a gray sky create a dynamic urban atmosphere.
I stroll through the lively streets of Moda on a wet afternoon, enjoying the trendy atmosphere between shops and cafes. The colorful balls and tram tracks give this walk a true scent of Istanbul’s Asian side.

📢 Local Expert Tip: For me, there is no debate: take the ferry from Eminönü in the late afternoon. You will arrive in Kadıköy with the golden colors of the sunset over the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. It’s free [with the card], and it’s the most beautiful show in Istanbul.

🕰️ Best time to visit Kadıköy?

The ideal is to plan at least a half-day, but a full day will allow you to stroll without rushing. The district changes its face as the hours go by.

To avoid the crowd

On weekdays, the morning is perfect for exploring the Kadıköy market in an authentic atmosphere. The district is much quieter. Avoid Saturday afternoons if you don’t like crowds, as that is when all the young Istanbulites meet there.

For taking photos and for the atmosphere

Photographers will love the “golden hour” along the Moda promenade, with the historical skyline as a backdrop. To feel the energy of the district, come in the early evening. The streets come alive, the “meyhanes” (taverns) fill up, and the atmosphere is electric and joyful.

💰 What budget to plan for visiting Kadıköy?

Good news! Kadıköy is one of the most affordable districts in Istanbul. Here is an idea to plan your budget without surprises.

  • Transport: The ferry trip costs less than £0.90 with the Istanbulkart.
  • Food: You can eat an excellent street meal (fish sandwich, stuffed mussels) for a few pounds. A meal in a good restaurant (esnaf lokantası) will cost you between £9 and £13.
  • Shopping: It is paradise for shopping at low prices, whether for clothes, second-hand books, or original souvenirs.
  • Activities: Most of Kadıköy’s pleasures are free: strolling, admiring the view, soaking up the atmosphere.

💻 Is the Istanbul Pass worth it?

Even though Kadıköy is a district for free exploration, a pass can be smart!

The Istanbul Tourist Pass® is your key to total freedom. Imagine: you no longer have to worry about topping up your transport card, as a certain number of trips are included. Plus, after your exploration of Kadıköy, the pass gives you skip-the-line access to over 100 other attractions on the European side, like a Bosphorus cruise that passes right in front of the district. If you plan to visit at least 3 or 4 major sites in addition to your day in Kadıköy, it becomes very cost-effective. It’s peace of mind guaranteed!

🔍 What to see, what to do, and practical tips in Kadıköy

The Kadıköy Market (Kadıköy Çarşısı)

This is the vibrant heart of the district. A labyrinth of streets where you will find everything: olives, cheeses, Turkish pastries like the famous baklava, fresh fish… Don’t miss tasting the stuffed mussels (midye dolma) at a street stall. This is where you absolutely must visit Çiya Sofrası, a legendary restaurant (made famous by the Netflix series “Chef’s Table”) that offers authentic cuisine from all regions of Turkey. It’s an experience in itself!

Bahariye Street and the Bull Statue

The Bull Statue (Boğa Heykeli) is the iconic meeting point of Kadıköy. From there starts Bahariye street, a long lively pedestrian artery, with its nostalgic tram, international shops, bookstores, and the elegant Süreyya Opera House.

The Moda district and its promenade

Walking down Bahariye Street, you will arrive in Moda. It’s the bohemian-chic corner of Kadıköy. Get lost in its quiet streets, discover specialty cafes, designer boutiques, and tea bars. The Moda promenade (Moda Sahili) is the perfect place to sit on the grass, drink a çay, and watch the sun set over the Golden Horn.

Dining and Shopping (My advice)

Avoid restaurant chains on the main arteries. My advice: dive into the small streets around the market. For a sweet break, try the Turkish delight at Hacı Bekir, an institution since 1777, or a Turkish coffee at Fazıl Bey’in Türk Kahvesi. For shopping, Tellalzade Street is famous for its antique dealers and second-hand booksellers.

I savor every bite of this soft pistachio dessert, a real sweet pleasure of Istanbul. The melting-crunchy contrast instantly takes me back to the Bosphorus patisseries.

Photo & Video (The best spots)

For the perfect photo, here are my secret spots: 1) From the ferry approaching Kadıköy, to capture the Haydarpaşa station. 2) On the rocks of the Moda promenade at sunset, for the skyline. 3) In Güneşli Bahçe street, for its village atmosphere and colorful restaurants.

💡 My tips for a successful visit to Kadıköy

To make your day in Kadıköy perfect, here is my local checklist:

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Kadıköy is best discovered on foot, and you will walk a lot!
  • Bring some cash. Many small shops and street vendors do not accept credit cards.
  • Don’t hesitate to get lost. The most beautiful discoveries are made by chance in the alleys, far from the main axes.
  • Taste everything! The street food is delicious and safe. Let yourself be tempted by a simit, a fresh pomegranate juice, or a balık ekmek (fish sandwich).
Ferry sailing on the Bosphorus with a clear view of the Galata Tower and the buildings of the Karaköy district in Istanbul.
I sail on the Bosphorus with a view of the Galata Tower, savoring the fresh breeze and the inimitable panorama of Istanbul. Each ferry crossing gives me the impression of connecting two worlds in a few minutes.

My “Off the Beaten Path” Tip

Honestly, the real secret of Kadıköy is to take your time. My tip? Buy a tea in a small glass cup (ince belli) from a street vendor on the Moda promenade, sit on the steps facing the sea, and simply watch the ferries pass. It’s a simple, authentic, and 100% Istanbulite moment that few tourists take the time to savor.

🗺️ What to see around Kadıköy

Take advantage of your visit to the Asian side to discover other nearby gems:

  • The Üsküdar district: Right next door, accessible by minibus (dolmuş) or metro. It is a more conservative and spiritual district, famous for its mosques and the Maiden’s Tower (10 minutes by bus).
  • Haydarpaşa Train Station: An iconic and photogenic building, right next to the pier (currently under renovation but visible from the outside).
  • Fenerbahçe Parkı: A magnificent seaside park for a peaceful stroll, with superb views of the islands.
  • Bagdat Avenue (Bağdat Caddesi): A huge avenue lined with luxury boutiques and cafes, often compared to the Champs-Élysées.
Busy quay at sunset, fishermen and families against an urban background. Fishing rods, golden light, and conviviality line the Bosphorus water.
Sitting on the Bosphorus quays at sunset, I breathe in all the energy of Istanbul mixed with the calm of the fishermen. Among the crowd, every moment here gives me the feeling of belonging to the city.

Itinerary suggestion

For a “Kadıköy Essentials” half-day: Start with the market in the morning, have lunch at Çiya Sofrası, stroll along Bahariye Street, then head down to Moda for a coffee and finish with the sunset on the promenade before taking the ferry back. It’s the perfect itinerary to capture the essence of the district.

⚠️ Tips to avoid scams

Kadıköy is a very safe district, as it is less touristy. However, remain vigilant against classic Istanbul scams. Here is how to spot them:

  • The shoe shiner who “drops” his brush: A man drops his brush in front of you. Out of kindness, you pick it up. To thank you, he insists on shining your shoes and then demands an exorbitant sum. Kevin’s Countermove: Never pick up the brush. Ignore him and continue on your way.
  • The “new best friend” at the bar: A very friendly man approaches you, offers you a drink, then another… In the end, the bill is astronomical and his burly “friends” strongly encourage you to pay. Kevin’s Countermove: Remain polite, but politely refuse any invitation from strangers to bars that seem suspicious to you, especially in dimly lit streets.

Simply remain vigilant and everything will go wonderfully well! The atmosphere in Kadıköy is truly benevolent.

Passing in front of this neighborhood florist, the brilliance of the colors makes me want to slow down to smell the scent of the bouquets. Buying a flower here is taking a bit of Istanbul’s poetry with you.

💬 My personal opinion on Kadıköy

After all these years in Istanbul, Kadıköy remains my favorite district. It is my oxygen, where I come to recharge. Here is my honest analysis.

The Expert’s Pros 👍

  • Authenticity: It is a district for Istanbulites, by Istanbulites. You live Istanbul, you don’t just visit it.
  • The culinary scene: From street food to gourmet restaurants, it is the belly of Istanbul. You eat incredibly well for cheap.
  • The laid-back atmosphere: Here, no pressure. You take the time to live, to drink a coffee, to read a book facing the sea.

The Cons 👎

  • The weekend crowd: On Saturdays, the district can be crowded, which can make the experience less pleasant. Solution: Prefer a visit on weekdays.
  • The (relative) distance: For a first short stay, being based on the Asian side may seem far from the main monuments. Solution: Dedicate a full day to it so as not to go back and forth.

I join the boarding queue for the ferry, impatient to cross the Bosphorus under the Istanbul sun. Each crossing gives me the impression of setting off on an adventure between the two continents.

My Favorite Moment

Frankly, for me, the essence of Kadıköy is captured in an instant. It is that moment when, after having wandered through the market, I sit on the terrace of a cafe in Moda. I hear the sound of the tram squeaking, the cry of the seagulls, the laughter of students… I order a “çay” and I watch people live. This mixture of sounds and energies, that’s the real Istanbul. Pure happiness.

🏗️ History and atmosphere of the Kadıköy district

Exploring Kadıköy is walking on millennia of history. Before being this trendy district, it was the ancient city of Chalcedon, founded well before Byzantium (the future Constantinople). It was called the “city of the blind”, because its founders supposedly did not see the much superior location of the Golden Horn just opposite!

Identity Card and Key Figures

  • Foundation: 685 BC (under the name of Chalcedon).
  • Architectural style: A fascinating mix of wooden Ottoman buildings, Art Deco buildings, Greek and Armenian churches, and modern structures.
  • Population: The district of Kadıköy has about 480,000 inhabitants, it’s like a large city all by itself!

Architectural Must-Sees

While strolling, look up. You will see the Süreyya Opera House, a magnificent Art Deco building from 1927. Also look for the historic pier (Kadıköy Vapur İskelesi), a beautiful example of the first Turkish national architecture. In the streets of Moda, you will find old wooden mansions (konak) that testify to the district’s cosmopolitan past.

What you should observe on site

During your visit, take the time to look up at the colorful facades of the “bar street” (Kadife Sokak). Don’t forget to look for the small Greek Orthodox churches hidden behind high walls. And above all, don’t miss the details of the wrought-iron balconies of the Moda buildings, which tell a story of past elegance.

I discover this green wall with fantastic colors, a living garden that takes me on a journey into a tale. The playful atmosphere makes me want to explore every detail like a curious child.
