Reaching the Asian side may seem intimidating, but it is actually child’s play and an integral part of the experience! Here are the best options.

Ferry and Metro

The most iconic and, honestly, the most magical way is to take the ferry (vapur). From Eminönü (near the Galata Bridge) or Karaköy, the journey takes about 20 minutes and offers you a breathtaking panoramic view. The cost is negligible with the Istanbulkart. Otherwise, the metro line M4 drops you directly in the heart of Kadıköy, a very fast option if you are coming from the Asian side.

Bus, Marmaray, and Taxi

Many bus lines serve Kadıköy, but the ferry remains simpler and more pleasant. The Marmaray (train under the Bosphorus) is also an excellent fast option from Sirkeci (European side).

This is where you absolutely must visit Çiya Sofrası, a legendary restaurant (made famous by the Netflix series “Chef’s Table”) that offers authentic cuisine from all regions of Turkey. It’s an experience in itself!

Bahariye Street and the Bull Statue

The Bull Statue (Boğa Heykeli) is the iconic meeting point of Kadıköy. From there starts Bahariye street, a long lively pedestrian artery, with its nostalgic tram, international shops, bookstores, and the elegant Süreyya Opera House.

The Moda district and its promenade

Walking down Bahariye Street, you will arrive in Moda. It’s the bohemian-chic corner of Kadıköy. Get lost in its quiet streets, discover specialty cafes, designer boutiques, and tea bars. The Moda promenade (Moda Sahili) is the perfect place to sit on the grass, drink a çay, and watch the sun set over the Golden Horn.

Dining and Shopping (My advice)

Avoid restaurant chains on the main arteries. My advice: dive into the small streets around the market. Kadıköy is a very safe district, as it is less touristy. However, remain vigilant against classic Istanbul scams. Here is how to spot them:

• The shoe shiner who “drops” his brush: A man drops his brush in front of you. Out of kindness, you pick it up. To thank you, he insists on shining your shoes and then demands an exorbitant sum. Kevin’s Countermove: Never pick up the brush. Ignore him and continue on your way.
• The “new best friend” at the bar: A very friendly man approaches you, offers you a drink, then another… In the end, the bill is astronomical and his burly “friends” strongly encourage you to pay. Kevin’s Countermove: Remain polite, but politely refuse any invitation from strangers to bars that seem suspicious to you, especially in dimly lit streets.

Simply remain vigilant and everything will go wonderfully well! The atmosphere in Kadıköy is truly benevolent.

💬 My personal opinion on Kadıköy

After all these years in Istanbul, Kadıköy remains my favorite district. It is my oxygen, where I come to recharge. Here is my honest analysis.

The Expert’s Pros 👍

• Authenticity: It is a district for Istanbulites, by Istanbulites. You live Istanbul, you don’t just visit it.
• The culinary scene: From street food to gourmet restaurants, it is the belly of Istanbul. You eat incredibly well for cheap.
• The laid-back atmosphere: Here, no pressure. You take the time to live, to drink a coffee, to read a book facing the sea.

The Cons 👎

• The weekend crowd: On Saturdays, the district can be crowded, which can make the experience less pleasant. Solution: Prefer a visit on weekdays.
• The (relative) distance: For a first short stay, being based on the Asian side may seem far from the main monuments. Solution: Dedicate a full day to it so as not to go back and forth.

My Favorite Moment

Frankly, for me, the essence of Kadıköy is captured in an instant. It is that moment when, after having wandered through the market, I sit on the terrace of a cafe in Moda. I hear the sound of the tram squeaking, the cry of the seagulls, the laughter of students… I order a “çay” and I watch people live. This mixture of sounds and energies, that’s the real Istanbul. Pure happiness.

Exploring Kadıköy is walking on millennia of history. Before being this trendy district, it was the ancient city of Chalcedon, founded well before Byzantium (the future Constantinople). It was called the “city of the blind”, because its founders supposedly did not see the much superior location of the Golden Horn just opposite!
