Topkapi Palace (Topkapı Sarayı) in Istanbul opens every day except Tuesday, with ticket offices running from 09:00 to 17:00. The combined foreign visitor ticket costs 2,750 ₺ (about £41.39) and covers the Harem and Hagia Irene. Allow 3 to 4 hours, turn up at 09:00 and start with the Harem.

A filmed walk through the courtyards, the Harem and the fourth courtyard: watch it the night before and you will know which gate comes next.

⏰ What are Topkapi Palace’s opening hours?

The ticket offices open from 09:00 to 17:00 all year, and the palace closes every Tuesday. There is no separate winter timetable. The official page does not post a closing time for the rooms; resellers give 18:00, so count on an hour of visiting at most after the last ticket is sold.

Around the religious holidays (Ramazan Bayramı from 9 to 11 March 2027, Kurban Bayramı from 16 to 19 May 2027), check the official page the day before. Istanbul is 3 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 2 hours ahead during British Summer Time, so set your phone clock before you plan the 09:00 slot.

To sleep a few minutes away and be at the gate when it opens, here are my favourite hotels in Sultanahmet.

Is Topkapi Palace open right now?

Checking the time in Istanbul…

Based on the official ticket office hours (09:00 to 17:00, closed on Tuesdays), without public holidays: check the National Palaces page before a holiday.

💰 How much is a ticket to Topkapi Palace?

Foreign visitors buy a combined ticket at 2,750 ₺ (about £41.39): palace, Harem and the church of Hagia Irene (Aya İrini), valid for one day from purchase. The Harem alone and Hagia Irene alone cost 1,050 ₺ each (about £15.80). Children aged 0 to 6 go in free.

The ministry presents the Museum Pass Istanbul as valid at 13 of its own museums, while Topkapi is run by the National Palaces Directorate (Milli Saraylar). Some resellers nonetheless say the pass is accepted at the palace: with no official confirmation, ask at the ticket office before you count on it. The Müzekart, for residents, opens neither the Harem nor Hagia Irene. Sterling amounts use the TCMB rate of 27 October 2026: £1 = 66.44 ₺. The Saturday night visit launched in summer 2026 has no published price for 2027 yet; I will update this page when it is announced.

Common mistake: “a Topkapi ticket costs 1,500 Turkish lira”, or 2,000, and “summer hours run until 19:00”. You will still find both on UK search results, hotel blogs and Facebook answers. The official National Palaces page (checked on 30 October 2026) shows 2,750 ₺ for the combined foreign ticket and a single ticket office timetable, 09:00 to 17:00, with no seasonal change. Those figures come from pages nobody has updated: budget 2,750 ₺ and get there before 16:00, whatever the season.

🗺️ Topkapi Palace map: what to see courtyard by courtyard

The palace runs through four courtyards, each more private than the last. The first, open to everyone, leads to Hagia Irene and the ticket office. The Gate of Salutation opens onto the second: imperial kitchens on the right, the Imperial Council (Divan) and the Harem entrance on the left. The Gate of Felicity leads into the third, home to the Treasury and the Sacred Relics. The fourth, a terrace, looks over the Bosphorus.

In the Treasury, the Spoonmaker’s Diamond (Kaşıkçı Elması, 86 carats) and the Topkapi Dagger with its three emeralds draw the longest queue of the day. In the Sacred Relics rooms an imam recites the Quran without a break: voices stay low and cameras stay down.

👑 Is the Topkapi Harem worth it?

Yes, and it is where I start. The Harem is included in the combined ticket, so skipping it means paying without seeing the most private part of the palace. Allow an hour for the public route, a small share of the apartments of the sultan’s mother, the princes and the concubines.

What I show friends: the Imperial Hall, under its dome, where the sultan received the family on feast days, and the Courtyard of the Favourites, quieter than the rest. Between 09:00 and 10:00 the İznik-tiled corridors are almost empty; by 11:00 you shuffle through in single file.

The Imperial Hall (Hünkâr Sofası), the largest room in the Harem: look up at the dome before you look at the sofa.

Local tip: flying in from the UK in winter, your body clock runs 3 hours behind, so 09:00 in Istanbul feels like 06:00 at home. Keep arrival day for a stroll and an early night, and do the palace on day two, when the opening-time slot comes easily.

🚋 How do you get to Topkapi Palace?

The T1 tram (Bağcılar to Kabataş) is unbeatable: get off at Sultanahmet, walk past Hagia Sophia and through the Imperial Gate (Bâb-ı Hümâyun), 10 minutes on foot. The Gülhane stop lets you walk up through the park, in the shade. A ride costs 46.20 ₺ (about £0.70) with an İstanbulkart.

  • From Taksim: F1 funicular to Kabataş, then T1 towards Bağcılar as far as Gülhane. Allow 25 minutes.
  • From Kadıköy: ferry to Eminönü (65.21 ₺, about £0.98), then 15 minutes on foot via Sirkeci and Gülhane Park.
  • By taxi: the meter starts at 71.94 ₺ (£1.08) and adds 47.92 ₺ (£0.72) per kilometre; from Taksim, expect 350 to 450 ₺ (£5 to £7) depending on traffic. The taxi drops you at the Imperial Gate; cars do not go in.

Interchanges, maps and night lines are all in my guide to getting around Istanbul by tram, metro and ferry.

The T1 at Sirkeci: two stops on, Gülhane leaves you at the foot of the park that climbs to the palace.

🚕 How do you get back from Topkapi without a taxi scam?

The taxis waiting outside the Imperial Gate at closing time know how tired visitors are by then. Here is my fix.

17:30 outside Topkapi’s Imperial Gate: the meter is “broken”, it is 1,000 ₺ to Karaköy, take it or leave it, and a queue of tourists behind me saying yes.

The price of an Uber ride is shown before you get in. Ride and driver are logged in the app, you pay by card, and there is no haggling.

Kevin's tip: I book from Gülhane Park before I walk out; the price is on my screen before I get in, so there is no meter left to argue about.

📱 Mobile data at the palace for tickets, maps and Uber

At Topkapi your phone does everything: ticket, map, audio guide and the ride home. Turkey is outside the EU, and many UK tariffs charge extra for data there, so check yours before you fly.

Combined ticket as a QR code, the palace map, the online audio guide in the Harem: without data, a visit to Topkapi gets complicated from the Gate of Salutation onwards.

Kevin's tip: I activate the Airalo eSIM on my eSIM-compatible phone the day before the flight, so there is nothing to hunt for at the airport; it is the cheapest provider I have found.

What time should you visit Topkapi to avoid the crowds?

At 09:00, when the ticket offices open. Tour coaches arrive around 10:00 and the crowd peaks from 11:00 to 15:00, especially from June to August and at weekends. Your second window: go in around 14:30, once the morning groups have left, as long as you keep two and a half hours before closing.

Avoid Mondays in summer: with the palace shut on Tuesday, plenty of travellers fall back on the day before. For photos I prefer the morning, when the light hits the pavilions of the fourth courtyard head on.

If you only have 2 hours (not on a Tuesday)

  • 09:00: ticket at the office, through the Gate of Salutation.
  • 09:10: Harem, 50 minutes.
  • 10:05: Imperial Council chamber and its gilded grille, 10 minutes.
  • 10:20: Gate of Felicity, then the Treasury (the Spoonmaker’s Diamond).
  • 10:50: fourth courtyard, Bosphorus view from the Baghdad Pavilion, out by 11:00.

⚠️ Which scams should you avoid around Topkapi Palace?

Sultanahmet is safe, but the stretch between Hagia Sophia and the Imperial Gate is where the touts gather. The two set-ups I run into most:

  • The fake “official” guide: laminated badge, a promise to get you past the ticket queue, then a tour price three times too high. My counter: a “Hayır, teşekkür ederim” (no, thank you) without slowing down; licensed guides do not tout at the gate.
  • The shoe-shiner’s brush: it drops “by accident” in front of you; pick it up and he shines your shoes as a thank-you, then asks for an outrageous sum. My counter: never pick it up, keep walking.

🗺️ My top itinerary for a morning at Topkapi

My order: the Harem before everyone else, the Treasury while the groups are at lunch, the fourth courtyard to finish.

  1. 08:45: queue at the ticket offices in the first courtyard, Hagia Irene on your left.
  2. 09:05: Gate of Salutation, then straight to the Harem entrance, on the left in the second courtyard.
  3. 10:05: Imperial Council chamber. Look for the gilded grille window above the viziers’ seats: the sultan listened from behind it, unseen.
  4. 10:30: the imperial kitchens and their chimneys, opposite, for the porcelain collection.
  5. 11:00: Gate of Felicity, Sacred Relics rooms, then the Treasury.
  6. 12:15: fourth courtyard, Baghdad and Revan pavilions, a çay facing the Bosphorus.
  7. 13:00: out via the first courtyard and Hagia Irene, included in your ticket.

In the afternoon, carry on to the upper gallery of Hagia Sophia, 5 minutes away on foot. For a full day in the old city, this morning drops straight into my plan for seeing Istanbul in a single day.

Gilded calligraphy and the sultan’s monogram (tuğra) above the arch: give it a minute, most visitors walk under it without looking up.

👗 What to wear and bring to Topkapi Palace

The palace is a museum with no dress code at the entrance, but the Sacred Relics rooms hold venerated objects, so cover shoulders and knees there. Add flat shoes, because the courtyards are cobbled and sloping, and a bottle of water in summer.

There is no left-luggage for large bags and a security check at the entrance, so travel light. Photos without flash are fine in the courtyards and most rooms, never in the Treasury or the Sacred Relics; tripods are refused. In a wheelchair the courtyards are manageable, but the Harem and many rooms have steps; a pushchair often has to be carried.

Local tip: the Konyalı restaurant in the fourth courtyard has the view, not the prices. I drink my çay at the small café next door, on the wooden benches facing the Bosphorus, and save lunch for the köfte houses of Sultanahmet.

🎟️ Istanbul Tourist Pass or separate tickets for Topkapi?

For a single monument, the ticket office wins. The question only comes up if you string together the big paid sights over two days. Here is the sum at foreign visitor prices found on 29 and 30 October 2026 (TCMB rate of 27 October 2026: £1 = 66.44 ₺).

SightPrice in liraPrice in pounds
Topkapi Palace, combined ticket (palace, Harem, Hagia Irene)2,750 ₺£41.39
Hagia Sophia, upper gallery1,388 ₺£20.89
Galata Tower1,666 ₺£25.08
Basilica Cistern (price after the transfer to be confirmed)1,500 to 1,950 ₺£22.58 to £29.35
Dolmabahçe Palace2,000 ₺£30.10
Total for the 5 sights9,304 to 9,754 ₺£140.04 to £146.81
Istanbul Tourist Pass, 2 days (GetYourGuide price seen on 30 October 2026, converted into pounds)11,050 ₺£166.31

With these five sights, the pass costs £20 to £26 more than separate tickets. It pays off once you add a Bosphorus cruise or another sight on its list. At Topkapi, the skip-the-line entry announced by the publisher matters mostly from June to August. The full sums are in my hands-on review of the Istanbul Tourist Pass.

Visiting from the UK: Topkapi compared with what you know at home

The closest picture for a British visitor: Hampton Court for the layout, with the Crown Jewels room of the Tower of London dropped into the third courtyard. Like Henry VIII’s palace, Topkapi grew one wing at a time around courtyards, and the Treasury queue moves just like the one at the Jewel House: slowly, past glass cases.

British citizens on an ordinary passport need no visa for tourism for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport needs 150 days of validity after arrival and one blank page, according to the GOV.UK travel advice for Turkey (updated 27 October 2026). Sockets are two-pin type C/F at 230 V, so pack a UK adapter for the phone that holds your ticket.

🏨 Where to stay near Topkapi Palace

🧭 What else is there to see near Topkapi Palace?

  • Hagia Sophia: 5 minutes away, upper gallery £20.89 (about 1,388 ₺).
  • Istanbul Archaeological Museums: just below the first courtyard, 3 minutes away, £12.54 (about 833 ₺).

If Ottoman palaces are your thing, keep half a day for Dolmabahçe, the 19th-century palace on the Bosphorus, closed on Mondays. For the rest of your stay, my list of the best things to do in Istanbul, area by area saves you the back-and-forth.

🏛️ What should you know about Topkapi’s history?

Mehmed II had the palace built from 1459, six years after the conquest of Constantinople, on Seraglio Point between the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. The sultans lived and ruled here for nearly four centuries, until Abdülmecid I moved to Dolmabahçe in 1856. The palace became a museum in 1924 and joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, as part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul.

Each sultan added his own pavilion, hence the mix of styles. The palace also housed the Enderun, the school that trained pages and senior officials, many of them recruited among Christian boys from the Balkans through the devşirme.

My verdict on Topkapi Palace

If you only pay for one monument in Istanbul, make it this one, ahead of Galata Tower.

Pros: the Harem, which no other site in the city matches, the Treasury, and the fourth-courtyard terrace, one of the best Bosphorus views in the old city.

Cons: 2,750 ₺, the priciest ticket in the old city, and the crowd from 11:00 to 15:00, which turns the Treasury into a corridor. My fix: the 09:00 opening, and the Treasury last.

My favourite moment: a bench in the fourth courtyard around midday, a çay in hand, cargo ships working up the Bosphorus below and gulls circling over the Baghdad Pavilion.
