Honestly, the Bosphorus is much more than just a strait. It is the soul of Istanbul, giving it a character unique in the world.
What’s crazy is thinking that while sailing on it, you are literally between two continents: Europe on one side, Asia on the other. It’s a place charged with history, where empires were made and broken for its control.

There isn’t just one, but several ways to experience the Bosphorus. To help you choose, here are the main options, from the most classic to the most local.
Sail on the Bosphorus
Watching palaces and mosques pass by from the water is a permanent spectacle.
- Public Ferries (Şehir Hatları): This is my favorite option. It’s the authentic and budget-friendly way, the one Istanbulites use every day. Simple, efficient, perfect for feeling the city’s pulse.
- Private Companies (Turyol…): A very practical alternative if you’re in a bit of a rush. Departures are frequent and the tour is often faster because there are no stops.
- Dinner Cruises: The “all-in-one” option for a lively evening. Honestly, it’s very touristy, but the view of Istanbul illuminated at night is superb.
Walk along the banks
Sometimes, the best way to enjoy the Bosphorus is to contemplate it from dry land. I advise you to stroll through the neighborhoods of Ortaköy, Bebek, Üsküdar or my favorite, the little village of Kuzguncuk.

Want the perfect plan? The one I give my friends for an intense and unforgettable day? Here it is. Hold on, we’re going together.
Price of a public Ferry ride: 35 TL or approx. £0.85 (2026 Update)
9:00: The departure. Eminönü. The air is already electric. Forget breakfast at the hotel. Your mission: grab a piping hot simit from a street vendor. That’s the real taste of Istanbul.
9:30: Dive towards Asia. Board the public ferry to Üsküdar. The crossing is short, but every second is a show. Watch the silhouette of Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia fade away…
10:00: The secret stopover. Kuzguncuk. Welcome to Asia! Flee the crowd and walk north along the water. In 15 minutes on foot, you stumble upon a treasure: Kuzguncuk. Here, time stands still. Colorful wooden houses, cats lazing in the sun, artists’ cafes…
13:00: Heading for chic Europe. Bebek. Take a bus or taxi along the Asian shore to Beylerbeyi, then a ferry to cross to Bebek. The shock is radical. Yachts, designer boutiques, trendy cafes… This is Istanbul’s relaxed luxury.
15:30: Descent to Ortaköy. Leave the luxury of Bebek. To reach Ortaköy, forget the ferry. It’s one of the most beautiful walks in Istanbul along the coast. Count a short half-hour of pure pleasure for the eyes. If you are tired, go to the main road and jump on any bus going south. The ride takes barely 5 minutes.
16:00: The apotheosis. Ortaköy. You’re there. The hour when the light turns golden. Get ready: this is where you’ll take THE iconic photo. The baroque mosque, fragile and sublime, standing out in front of the monumental Bosphorus Bridge.
18:00: Return, the city lights up. The day isn’t over. Instead of jumping in a taxi, live the local experience: take the bus from Ortaköy to Kabataş, then the T1 tram that takes you back to the center. Outside, the city lights turn on one by one. The Bosphorus turns from gold to midnight blue.
19:00: Full circle. Eminönü. Back to the starting point. The smell of roasted chestnuts and fish sandwiches fills the air. The day was intense, wasn’t it? You didn’t just see the Bosphorus. You lived it.
